It’s half 6 on a Monday morning and everyone is still in bed snoozing. Everyone besides those few who are up, dressed and ready for a 40 minute swet fest. Sounds fun right? 🙁 Well unfortunately early morning workouts (as difficult as they may be) are usually the most convenient for those people with commitments such as work or College etc.
So what’s the problem? If you’ve ever been waken up by an unwelcome alarm hours before you’re ready, then you’ll understand the dilemma. The solution? Here are 5 ways to help you push through that early morning mind-set and smash out your workout:
1. Prepare the night before…Like seriously prepare.
Setting an alarm and loosely planning your workout the night before is where most people settle. Unfortunately ‘most people’ hit that snooze button in the morning. If you really want to burry this bad habit, then you need to help yourself a little. You’re not doing yourself any favours if nothing is ready! The additional stress of preparing breakfast, planning your workout and finding something to wear is more than enough to persuade yourself that it just isn’t worth the hassle.
If it wasn’t clear already the solution here is to prepare like a mad man. Prepare your breakfast the night before, plan your workout, and get your gear out ready. Give yourself every incentive possible to get out of bed!
2. Make it a lot harder to press ‘Snooze’
We all know from experience that it’s a lot easier to press snooze than to get up before the sun. And that’s okay (Kind of), we all need our beauty sleep. Just remind yourself that although you may feel tired, if your body has had sufficient rest (7-9 hours), then it is more than ready to get up and start the day.
Okay so back to my original point. We would much rather press snooze than get up right? The simple yet very effective solution is to move your phone/alarm as far away as possible (as long as you can still hear it). This way, you can’t simply roll over and turn it off. Instead you must get up, and walk away from your beloved bed. The effect? After being up and walking for less than a minute you’ll instantly feel more awake and ready to tackle your workout!
3. Enlist a workout buddy.
By far the easiest way to motivate you to get up in the morning is your workout buddy. The more competitive the friendship the better! You don’t want your mate to beat you to the gym do you? Exactly. On those days when you’re struggling to find the energy your workout buddy will be there to wake your ass up. Simple. ‘But what if we both can’t get up?’ well in that case you both lose together, its a win win! Or a win lose…
4. Stop telling yourself you’re not a morning person
Okay yeah, so some people are naturally better and brighter in the mornings than others. Although if you keep telling yourself you cant even look at another person until 9am it may actually become reality. Put simply, the more you tell yourself mornings aren’t for you, the more they won’t be. Getting up early it a little like a band aid. The more you think about it, the more painful it will be. Whereas if you just do it, it won’t be so bad.
5. Wake up to badass music
Most default alarms consist of the same monotonous, ear piercing sounds. But you know you can change it right? Many people find music to be their main source of motivation when it comes to working out, and getting shit done. Whether that’s abit of Eminem, rocky or whatever. So if it works for working out, it’ll work for waking up right? How much better would it be to wake up to ‘eye of the tiger’ or ‘curtain call’ rather than ‘gentle breeze’. Give it a try!
