What is manliness? The phrase is thrown about a lot; and is often associated with being brave, courageous and strong. However some could argue that with the diversity of modern day society that definition is outdated… Although I would consider anyone who does these 8 things is doing it right!
Sport isn’t everyone’s thing; and that’s okay. However this doesn’t mean you can get away with doing nothing… Working out has numerous benefits, you’ll feel better, look better (hopefully), stay illness free and reduce levels of depression. It doesn’t have to be a crazy commitment, You can get away with doing 4o minutes or so every other day. Easy right? Check out these workouts if you’re stuck for ideas. What’s your excuse?
2. Have some sort of grooming routine
You’re not doing yourself any favours by rolling up to work/college/Uni, with the remnants of last nights tea stuck in-between your teeth… Everyone should brush their teeth (Obviously) but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Every Man should take the time to get a shower EVERY day, wash their face, brush their hair, and use deodorant. In addition; although the rough look is ‘cool’ what’s not cool is to let your facial hair grow out of control. Or any hair for that matter… You don’t have to shave it. A simple grooming tool (with an attachment to what length you want) should do the trick.
3. Eat Breakfast. Daily.
Hands down the biggest mistake people make is skipping breakfast. “I don’t have time”, “I’m not hungry in the morning”. Those who eat breakfast are healthier overall, have more energy, are less tempted to snack on rubbish, are mentally sharper, and even sleep better. Shall I go on? If that’s not enough to persuade you, having breakfast kick-starts your metabolism early in the day; meaning you can burn off those extra calories by eating MORE.
4. Shake Hands
There’s nothing that screams Gentleman more than a nice firm handshake. They say that you can can tell a lot about a man from his handshake; and they’re right. A 2012 study led by the University of Illinois discovered that social interactions preceded by a handshake were deemed as much more positive experiences. They activate the nucleus accumbens part of the brain, which plays a role in pleasurable emotions and excitement.
Put simply a handshake goes a long way, do it right and you instantly make a good impression. Do it wrong however, and you run the risk on coming off as abit of a pushover. No pressure.
5. Respect. Everyone
Respect should be the pinnacle of everyone’s personality. If you’re respectful people will like you more; you’ll come across as more approachable, likable and generally just a better person. Racism is outdated. A REAL Man respects everyone’s beliefs and opinions even if he doesn’t agree with them himself. As the old saying goes: ‘treat others how you’d like to be treated’.
In this day and age knowledge is power; and we’d be foolish not to exploit that. The more you learn (a little bit each day) the more understanding you become of the world around you. Watching the news is great, but reading the news is better. Listening to an audiobook is great too, but once again, reading a book is even better. As the saying goes ‘you learn something new everyday’. Or atleast you should…
7. Dress for the occasion
Now this ones more common sense than anything, but you’d be surprised. You wouldn’t wear pyjamas to work, and you wouldn’t wear a suit to the gym. It really is that simple. Formal events such as Interviews and Weddings. You wear a suit. Going to College?Uni? Casual wear, Jeans and a T-shirt, maybe even a polo! The point is dress for the occasion, keep it simple, and do me proud 🙂
8. Grow a Beard (Or atleast try)
What?! I’m contradicting point number 2? Nope, the common misconception is that you cant control your facial hair whilst growing a beard. Yes you can. Although it may take longer, when it starts to get out of control, slap the attachment on the grooming tool and just take it back a notch. The only exception is when you’re young (roughly between 15-19) when you’re at that awkward stage and you have no choice but to let it grow…Or shave it all off. Your choice.
Okay so back to the main point; Men look awesome with beards. Don’t get me wrong, they are not for everyone, however if you can master the beard you’ve just upgraded your style big time. Research shows that Women love a man with a good beard! Infact, if you know a guy with a kickass beard I can guarantee you he does well with the ladies. What you cant grow a beard?? As I said beards are not for everyone; although even a small amount of facial hair can go a long way. Give it a go!
