You’ve been hitting the gym for a while, and have finally decided to make it official! And by official I mean sorting yourself out with a gym bag. As it stands your gym bag likely contains your trainers, workout attire and possibly some simple grooming tools. (Eg: Brush or comb)
Besides the obvious, (Eg: Your gym clothes) here are 10 essentials you NEED in your gym bag:
At the end of the day, the music in the gym isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Whether you’re an earphone or headphone kinda guy, it’s never a bad idea to block it all out and focus on your training. If you’re in the market for a quality pair of earphones I recommend these Samsung 3.5mm stereo earphones for a stellar experience. (Currently on offer for £4.34 on Amazon!) If wireless is more your style, why not try these Anker Bluetooth earphones.
2. Water Bottle
As simple as it sounds it’s often overlooked. And although most gyms offer the service of water fountains, it’s hardly convenient. The solution? A basic reusable water bottle. Whether that’s a bottle of water from the local shop, or a proper hard plastic bottle. (Official LadsLife water bottles coming soon!) Either way it’s important to stay hydrated.
3. Deodorant and aftershave
All I’m going to say is don’t be that guy…The guy who floods the changing rooms with his body odour. Seriously, not cool. Sweating is a sure sign of a good workout, just don’t let is be your downfall when you leave the gym. A few sprays of deodorant and a couple drops of your favourite fragrance should do the trick. You never know who you might bump into!
4. A Shaker
Supplements during, before and/or after the gym are all well and good…if you have something to mix it in. That’s why a simple shaker makes the list. If you’re not 100% sure on what supplements to take, check out this easy to follow supplement guide.
5. A Soothing Muscle Rub
If you’re training hard, muscle aches and pains are inevitable. Although they often represent hard work, aches and pains are hardly a treat. That’s why a quality muscle rub can make your life a whole lot easier. A tube of deep heat, or tub of lucky tiger muscle rub should do the trick. If you’re looking for that little extra in terms of recovery, don’t hesitate to check out these ‘5 ways to relieve muscle pain’
6. An Extra T-Shirt
There are a couple of reasons why a spare t-shirt is a gym bag essential. Once of which being a fresh, clean top will help you remain odour free on your commute home. The other reason being that the humidity and sweat, combined with the cold outside of the gym can give you quite the chill, potentially resulting in a cold. Which is defiantly not good news.
7. A Towel…Or Two
If you’re planning on hitting the shower before you leave then you need a towel. (Obviously) On the other hand a small towel is essential for wiping down the equipment after you’ve used it. It’s all fun and games hitting the bench press until you find someone’s greasy head patch… Make sure you wipe it down! A little bit of hygiene makes the experience a whole lot better.
8. A Reliable Fitness Tracker
A good fitness tracker is perfect for those who want to keep a close eye on their progress. From your HR to Hydration levels, you’d be surprised what a little wrist watch can tell you. (Besides the time…) If you’re serious about your fitness, a Fitbit is something you should seriously consider.
9. A foam roller
Foam rollers are small foam cylinders perfect for stretching off, and promoting recovery after a tough workout. If you’re not too familiar with foam rolling, be sure to check out ‘foam rolling 101’ and try it out.
10. A Padlock
Last but not least you’re going to need a padlock. This will allow you to lock up your new gym bag full of all your new gym gear. (And all 9 essentials!) You can pick yourself up a simple padlock on Amazon for around £6-7.
