The sad reality is that knee injuries are all too common amongst athletes and sports people alike. Especially when it comes to lifting weights. It seems like every time we Squat, Deadlift, or Snatch, we’re one step closer towards a torn ACL or ruptured ligament. Is a simple knee support the solution?
The obvious solution would be to ensure that we’re executing our lifts with proper form, and lifting sensible weights. Unfortunately, not everyone’s bodies can cope with the pressure put onto their joints when lifting. Regardless of how careful we are.

You should be wearing a knee support when lifting. A recent study found that the knee is the most commonly complained about joint in the body, this is because it is the biggest joint in our body, and therefore suffers the most stress. So imagine the additional strain put onto our knees when we’re lifting weights.
When a heavy load is put though our lower body, our knees are compressed and the knee cap literally grinds into it’s self. Which is a scary thought. This often leads to knee injuries in later life such as tendonitis.
When wearing a knee support our joint is provided with additional support, allowing for less strain to be suffered. in addition, the compression of the support promotes blood flow around the joint, improving circulation, and the supply of essential nutrients in the blood.
By reducing the unnecessary strain put onto the joint, we significantly reduce the potential damage being done.

When to wear knee supports
You don’t need to wear knee supports all the time. Only during activities and sports that put particular strain on the joint. It’s probably a good idea to go without them when they’re not necessary (Eg: when warming up, stretching etc).
In conclusion knee injuries are far too common. Especially to athletes who powerlift, and put particular strain on their joints. To help ourselves out and reduce our chances of injury, a knee support is a worthwhile investment. Wearing a knee support when lifting heavy weights will reduce the unnecessary stress put onto the joint, in addition to promoting circulation, and recovery.
